Book News
Through 17 essays, this book traces the work of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, established in 1981. It examines five financially supported projects in Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Pakistan, and Rwanda to represent the five regions of the world. The projects are illustrated through brief articles and photos, along with statements from past and present members of the Fund's Board of Trustees, who consider issues and suggestions. Three chapters provide background on torture issues, including the legal definition under international law, medical diagnosis and treatment, and the history of the Fund. Essays were contributed by authors from the U. of Bern, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, journalists, and others. There is no index.
