If the past is prologue, then George R.R. Martin's masterwork'the most inventive and entertaining fantasy saga of our time'warrants one hell of an introduction. At long last, it has arrived with The World of Ice and Fire. This lavishly illustrated volume is a comprehensive history of the Seven Kingdoms, providing vividly constructed accounts of the epic battles, bitter rivalries, and daring rebellions that lead to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and HBO's Game of Thrones. In a collaboration that's been years in the making, Martin has teamed with Elio M. Garcia, Jr., and Linda Antonsson, the founders of the renowned fan site'perhaps the only people who know this world almost as well as its visionary creator. Collected here is all the accumulated knowledge, scholarly speculation, and inherited folk tales of maesters and septons, maegi and singers. It is a chronicle which stretches from the Dawn Age to the Age of Heroes; from the Coming of the First Men to the arrival of aegon the Conqueror; from aegon's establishment of the Iron Throne to Robert's Rebellion and the fall of the Mad King, aerys II Targaryen, which has set into motion the "present-day" struggles of the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Targaryens. The definitive companion piece to George R.R. Martin's dazzlingly conceived universe, The World of Ice and Fire is indeed proof that the pen is mightier than a storm of swords.

This book gives the history of the world of Ice and Fire (what television fans know as 'The Game of Thrones books'). The history is well done, and it gives context to a lot of the backstories in the books. The book is also filled with beautiful artwork on characters and places in Westeros and beyond. I would recommend this book for fans of the novels, and as a primer for those who have yet to read the novels.

If you thought the book of Genesis and Exodus were solid (and the genealogy stuff was your jam) but also thought there could be more dragons and ice zombies riding on giant spiders.

Or if you're a fan of the books A Song of Ice and Fire or the HBO series Game of Thrones BUT you are also a super fan of history textbooks.

Well, nerds, this book is just for you! I loved it.

If you're really into Game of Thrones and have already read the existing books, then this might be up your alley.

It's basically a back history of the world. You can really geek out with this if you want.

However, it's not the most compelling read. It lacks Martin's signature style, in my opinion, and probably wouldn't hold the interest of casual fans of the series.

So amazing. I love this look into the history of Westeros, from its beginnings to the Conquest, and all in exquisite detail! The artwork too is amazing and so beautiful! Definitely worth the time of any ASOIAF/GoT fan!

Excellent-- The illustrations and maps were a beautiful addition. The book goes through the whole history of Westeros including the Targaryen king, The Reign of Dragons and the Fall of Dragons. Plus much more. The book is quite large and has 330 pages, lots of information. Must read for any Game of Thrones fan!

This book is amazing. I was just stunned at the richness and history of the world GRRM has created. No wonder he's called "The American Tolkien." There are the seeds of a hundred stories in here. And the book is fully illustrated with gorgeous, original art! If you want to wander around Westeros for a few days -- read this book! It is so fantastic!

Sexual Content: Incest- -however, this reads like a history book so there are no graphic depictions of sex--unlike the book series. The actual GoT book have graphic content.

Violence: Battle, fights, brutality. Not as violent as the actual GoT novels.
